
Dr. Fylaktis Fylaktou presented research at the 35th Annual Meeting of the Society for the Neural Control of Movement (NCM), held April 20–24, 2026 at the Portopia Hotel in Kobe, Japan. The conference brought together the global community dedicated to understanding how the brain controls movement, serving as a premier forum for cutting-edge research in motor behavior, neural control, and sensorimotor integration.
Poster Presentation
Dr. Fylaktou presented poster P2-D-106, titled “Visceral Sensorimotor Dysregulation in Anorexia Nervosa,” during Poster Session 2 on Friday, April 24. The poster highlighted findings on how gastrointestinal interoceptive signaling is disrupted in individuals with anorexia nervosa, connecting the lab’s gut-brain research to the broader neuroscience of sensorimotor control. This work builds on the lab’s ongoing NIH-funded study (R01MH127225) using ingestible vibrating capsules to probe gastrointestinal mechanosensation in eating disorders.
Significance
The NCM meeting has traditionally focused on skeletal motor control, but the Khalsa Lab’s presence underscores a growing recognition that visceral motor and sensory systems — the neural circuits controlling the heart, gut, and lungs — are integral to understanding the full scope of neural control of movement. Presenting at NCM allowed the lab to connect with researchers in complementary fields, including:

- Computational approaches to sensorimotor integration
- Body representation and exoskeleton research
- Autonomic nervous system and visceral motor pathways
